World Championships: Doubts over Nigeria’s participation

Consequently the proposed camp to prepare the team is still an issue on the drawing board. Efforts to get word from the Vice President of the federation, Dr.Oshodi Musa to clear the air yesterday proved abortive. He refused to pick his calls.
The judo federation according to investigation is contending with paucity of funds. As one of the sports dumped by the National Sports Commission, in terms of funding judo is expected to raise money for itself.
Unfortunately the present board has not been able to rise up to that challenge. Instead of a sponsorship drive, the board members have been running the activities of the federations with contribution from their pockets. Some members judoblitzng.com learnt are already complaining.
Even the President of the federation, Mr. Timothy Nsirim who is fighting a battle of his life on the political front has not been in a position to effectively inspire the federation due to the distraction he is suffering in the local Rivers State politics.
Nsirim is the sacked ObioAkpor Local Government chairman who is a casualty in the long running battle between President Goodluck Jonathan and Rivers State governor, RotimiAmaechi. A concerned judoka lamented that the sport will suffer if the NSC leaves it to the present board.
According to the judoka who did not want to be named “This board won’t achieve much if it is left on its own. The president of the board is a troubled man and he thinks more of his politics than the progress of Nigerian judo for now. The NSC should rescue the sport by providing funds”.
If Nigeria fails to attend the World Championship, its chances of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics will be slim.
